In English, Spanish, French and most languages, the actual verb form changes, sometimes very drastically, based on when the action took place. In Chinese, this is not the case. To say "I go" would be "Wo qu" (pronounced "Wor choo"). To say "I went" would be "Wo qu le" (pronounced "Wor choo le"). Notice the "le" at the end of the sentence, which indicates that the action is in the past. However, the verb itself "qu" has not changed. Regardless of whether you are doing an action now, in the past or in the future, Chinese does not require you to modify the verb form.

3. No Gender Nouns - Gender nouns are a common component in some languages such as Spanish and French. There are no gender nouns in Chinese.

4. Chinese Grammar is Relatively Simple - A sentence in English such as, "I want to go to the beach" in Chinese would be translated as "I want go beach". There are rarely any "extra" words used such as "to", "the", etc. Many beginners learning Chinese take a while to get used to speaking so straightforward and without these words so common in other languages.

Then, you must be asking yourself... So if that's all true, then why do people say it's so hard to learn Chinese!?! Learning Chinese does have its challenges. These challenges include:

1. Characters Instead of an Alphabet - The Chinese language is composed of over 30,000 characters, although only a few thousand are really necessary to learn for daily conversation. While Chinese has something called "radicals" which do make up characters, there is no alphabet in the standard sense of the word. This can make learning Chinese more difficult because you won't be able to use reading as a way to learn to speak. For example, if you know English and have a basic concept of how Spanish is pronounced, you could pick up any book and begin to read it. You may not know what the meaning is, but at least you can read and pronounce what is on paper. Chinese however is not like this. If you haven't specifically memorized the character you are reading, you don't know it and cannot say it. Therefore, it is impossible for a beginner to pick up a piece of paper and read the Chinese characters on it. This is why many people learn to speak Chinese quite well, yet can't read and write Chinese characters.

2. Tones - Chinese is a tonal language, meaning that the pronunciation of the word affects its meaning. This can be tricky to those who have not grown up with a tonal language as their mother tounge. There are examples such as "ma" which can mean "mother", "horse", "port" and a few other things just by changing the tone. While tones are important and certainly a challenge, don't let this be an excuse not to learn Chinese. The more familiar you become with the language the more straightforward speaking with the proper tones will become. So, I decided to write this short article on the do's and don'ts on a date with a Chinese female.

Do:
1. Be polite and gentlemanly on the first few dates until she reveals her true character to you. Some Chinese women really have a desire for the difference a westerner provides in a relationship; so, if you are simply like Chinese guys she has dated before it will bore her.

2. Compliment her on her clothing or hairstyle. Many Chinese women have simply made the effort with their appearance for you, even if it's unclear that it is a possibly romantic date they are going on, they will still care about their appearance in front of you. You commenting on her appearance says you notice things that other men possibly don't. This puts you in a strong position.

3. Be prepared to take the lead in the conversation unless she shows you she wishes otherwise. Many Chinese females are quite reserved on the first date and even quite a few subsequent ones. They rarely open up quickly unless they are a certain type of Chinese female.

Don't:
1. Be over-confident; most Chinese people consider modesty to be a virtue in a male. Mid-Autumn Festival – Another Bitter-Sweet Love Story in China

Like a fair amount of Chinese holidays, the Mid-Autumn Festival is also a posthumous celebration of bitter-sweet romance. There’s a lot of beautiful legends about the moon in China, but the most popular one tells an archer named Hou Yi who, in typical awesome-hero fashion, had a beautiful Chinese wife named Chang’e.

A long, long time ago, a terrible drought plagued the earth. Ten suns burned fiercely in the sky like smoldering volcanoes. The trees and grass were scorched. The land was cracked and parched, and rivers ran dry. Many people died of hunger and thirst. The King of Heaven sent Hou Yi down to the earth to help. When Hou Yi arrived, he took out his red bow and white arrows and shot down nine suns one after another. The weather immediately turned cooler. Heavy rains filled the rivers with fresh water and the grass and trees turned green. Life had been restored and humanity was saved.

He goes to the Kunlun Mountains where the Western Queen Mother lives. Out of respect for the good deeds the has done, the Western Queen Mother rewards Hou Yi with elixir, a fine powder made from kerndls of fruit which grows on the tree of eternity. At the same time, she tells him: If you and your wife share the elixir, you will both enjoy eternal life. But if only one of you takes it,that one will ascend to Heaven and become immortal. Hou Yi returns home and tells his Chinese wife all that has happened and they decide to drink the elixir together on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month when the moon is full and bright.

A wicked and merciless man named Feng Meng secretly hears about their plan. He wishes Hou Yi an early death so that he can drink the elixir himeslf and become immortal. His opportunity finally arrives. One day, when the full moon is rising, Hou Yi is on his way home from hunting. Feng Meng kills him. The murderer then runs to Hou Yi's home and forces Chang'e to give him the elixir. Without hesitating, Chang'e picks up the elixir and drinks it all.

Overcome with grief, Chang'e rushes to her dead husband's sied, weeping bitterly. Soon the elixir begins to have its effect and Chang'e feels herself being lifted towards Heaven.

Chang'e decides to live on the moon because it is nearest to the earth. There she lives a simple and contented life. Even though she is in Heaven, her heart remains in the world of mortals. Never does she forget the deep love she has for Hou Yi and the love she feels for the people who have shared their sadness and happiness.

Another legend explained the role of the Old Man on the Moon, the Divine Match-maker. The Chinese believed that marriages were made in Heaven but prepared on the moon. The Old Man on the Moon tied the feet of young men and women with red cords for marriage. Thus a maiden made offerings and prayed to him during the Mid-Autumn Festival, hoping that some day she would ride in the red bridal sedan chair.

The Qixi Festival, literally "Double Seventh Day", also known as the Magpie Festival, falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the Chinese calendar, thus its name. It is sometimes called the Chinese Valentine's Day since the late 1990s. This year, the festival falls on August 6. In the late summer, the stars Altair and Vega are high in the night sky, and the Chinese tell the following love story:

A young cowherd, Niulang, came across a beautiful girl, Zhinü (literally "the weaver girl"), the seventh daughter of the Goddess, who had just escaped from boring heaven to look for fun. The naughty princess soon fell in love with Niulang, and they married without the knowledge of the Goddess. They lived happily and had two children. However, the Goddess of Heaven found out that Zhinü, a fairy girl, had married a mere mortal. The Goddess was furious and ordered Zhinü to return to heaven. On Earth, Niulang was very upset that his wife had disappeared. Suddenly, his ox told him that if he killed it and put on its hide, he would be able to go up to Heaven to find his wife. So he killed the ox and carried his two beloved children off to Heaven to find Zhinü. The Goddess found out and was very angry. Taking out her hairpin, she scratched a wide river in the sky to separate the two lovers forever, thus forming the Milky Way between Altair and Vega.

Once a year all the magpies in the world would take pity on them and fly up to heaven to form a bridge, "the bridge of magpies", over the star Deneb in the Cygnus constellation so that the lovers can be together for a single night, on the seventh night of the seventh moon.

Do you know that next Monday (6th June, 2011) is Chinese Dragon Boat Festival? Officially on falling on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the Dragon Boat Festival is also known as Double Fifth Day. This is a transitional festival with a hitory of more than 2, 000 years, commemorates the death of a great Chinese national hero and China's earliest poets, Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in the river over 2,000 years ago to protest against the corrupt rulers.

Legend of the Dragon Boat Festival's Origin
At the end of the Zhou Dynasty, the area we now know as China had fallen into a state of fragmentation and conflict. While the Zhou dynasty had ruled for several centuries, several other states, originally feudal domains, tried to carve out their own kingdoms. The state of Qin would eventually emerge the victor and unify all of China under one rule for the first time in history.

Qu Yuan served as minister to the Zhou Emperor. A wise and articulate man, he was loved by the common people. He did much to fight against the rampant corruption that plagued the court-- thereby earning the envy and fear of other officials. Therefore, when he urged the emperor to avoid conflict with the Qin Kingdom, the officials pressured the Emperor to have him removed from service. In exile, he traveled, taught and wrote for several years. Hearing that the Zhou had been defeated by the Qin, he fell into despair and threw himself into the Milou River. His last poem reads:

Many a heavy sigh I have in my despair,
Grieving that I was born in such an unlucky time,
I yoked a team of jade dragons to a phoenix chariot,
And waited for the wind to come,
to sour up on my journey

As he was so loved by the people, fishermen rushed out in long boats, beating drums to scare the fish away, and throwing zong zi into the water to feed braver fish so that they would not eat Qu Yuan's body.

The Modern Dragon Boat Festival

 Starting from that time to this day, people commemorate Qu Yuan through Dragon Boat Races, eating zong zi, and several other activities, on the anniversary of his death: the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
Dragon Boat races are the most exciting part of the festival, drawing crowds of spectators. Dragon Boats are generally brightly painted and decorated canoes. Ranging anywhere from 40 to 100 feet in length, their heads are shaped like open-mouthed dragons, while the sterns end with a scaly tail. Depending on the length, up to 80 rowers can power the boat. A drummer and flag-catcher stand at the front of the boat. Before a dragon boat enters competition, it must be "brought to life" by painting the eyes in a sacred ceremony. Races can have any number of boats competing, with the winner being the first team to grab a flag at the end of the course. Annual races take place all over China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and other overseas Chinese communities.

Zongzi is an essential food of the Dragon Boat Festival. In early times, it was only glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in reed or other plant leaves and tied with colored thread, but now the fillings are more diversified, including jujube and bean paste, fresh meat, and ham and egg yolk. If time permits, people will soak glutinous rice, wash reed leaves and wrap up zongzi themselves. Otherwise, they will go to shops to buy whatever stuff they want. The custom of eating zongzi is now popular in North and South Korea, Japan and Southeast Asian nations.

Talisman and Charms
On Dragon Boat Festival, parents also need to dress their children up with a perfume pouch. They first sew little bags with colorful silk cloth, then fill the bags with perfumes or herbal medicines, and finally string them with silk threads. The perfume pouch will be hung around the neck or tied to the front of a garment as an ornament. They are said to be able to ward off evil.
